November is a busy month! Some of the key days to remember this month are Veteran’s Day, Election Day, and Thanksgiving. If your district is anything like mine then you might also have report cards and parent conferences this month as well! With so much going on this month, make sure that you don’t forget some key read alouds for this month!
“Veterans: Heroes in Our Neighborhood” by Valerie Pfundstein. This rhyming book creates mindfulness and appreciation for the Veterans who have served in our country, who are also people that we see in our everyday lives.
“I’ll Lend You My Daddy” by Becky King. This story follows families who are affected by having loved ones who are deployed. This story is great to get students thinking about empathy and how these families must feel having someone deployed.
“Amelia Bedelia’s First Vote” by Herman Parish. In this story, Amelia Bedelia is very excited about her school’s Election Day. Follow along with Amelia as she votes!
“If I Were the President” by Catherine Stier. This book walks students through what it would be like to be the president! Take a look at all of the important responsibilities that the president holds, and take a look around the White House.
“Balloons Over Broadway” by Melissa Sweet. This story is about the puppeteer who first invented the balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. This story is great to tie into a STEM project where students can create their own parade floats!
“A Turkey For Thanksgiving” by Eve Bunting. Mr. and Mrs. Moose have all of their animal friends over for Thanksgiving. There is someone missing though… That animal would be Turkey! When the animals go out to find him, they find Turkey shaking with fear. He does not realize that he is wanted as a guest, not the meal!
“Thankful” by Eileen Spinelli. This story gets students thinking about what they are thankful for. It touches on small things that one might take for granted and it talks about different people we can be thankful for such as firemen or gardeners.
“A Plump and Perky Turkey” by Teresa Bateman. A town is missing a turkey for their Thanksgiving feast! They come up with a plan to lure one into town by hiring a “model” turkey for the fair. The townspeople are not prepared to deal with a clever turkey like Pete!
“Turkey Trouble” by Wendi Silvano. Turkey is nervous about the upcoming holiday, Thanksgiving. He decides that he is going to disguise himself to stay safe this Thanksgiving. This book is a great way to lead into a disguise a turkey project. Students enjoy this creative project!
